Land Park Rugby – Home of Motley – Sacramento, CA

The formal season commences April 17th and lasts for seven to eight weeks.

To that end it is not too late for new players to join, so please advocate for Motley and help us recruit!

Our local opponents include Elk Grove and Motherlode, whose home pitch is in Cameron Park, a bit of a drive.  We will also likely play teams from the Bay Area, so be prepared for a road trip on one or more Saturdays.   Games typically last one hour, but we may have multiple, shorter games on occasion.

  • REGISTRATION AND DUES– this is the big item.  The league requires registration prior to April 17.  I have attached registration instructions to this email.  WE REGISTER UNDER SACRAMENTO RUGBY UNION, NOT LAND PARK.  Please note that dues are currently $45 (youth)-$70(MS) (I think), which covers Norcal Rugby and USA Rugby dues Motley owes for each player.  We will ask for total dues per player of $150 (a discount from other years where dues were $200+).  Consequently those who paid $45 will be required to pay $105 while those who paid $70 will be required to pay $80.
    • We offer a discount for those families with two or more players
  •       We offer partial scholarships – please visit with coach Rich in confidence to discuss

Team moms will distribute jerseys soon.  Jerseys are on loan and to be returned end of season.

Black socks – we provide for $6

  • Black rugby shorts – we have about 12, $35 each.  You may purchase black rugby shorts at sporting goods stores.
  • Team photos – we need a volunteer to help orchestrate.

Our trainings continue Tuesday/Thursday at Land Park next to the Land Park Golf clubhouse.

Come to practice prepared, with a mouthguard, cleats and water.

We are also hopeful the traditional Summer Sevens season will transpire, with weekend tournaments beginning June.

Please email or phone coach Rich with questions.

    • Review and sign the Covid waiver document and provide to Motley administration before your child enters the pitch (first time only)

Please see attached the COVID prevention practice plan.  Also please review the Covid waiver document.

  • Although our annual dues are typically $200 we are limiting dues initially to $75 due to the possibility of the season being cut short (or not even commencing).  The $75 covers our cost to USA Rugby and Rugby Norcal per player registered.  We will ask for additional dues if/when the season progresses with the goal to collect the $200 prior to season end.
  • RugbyNorcal has changed the registration process so that we now must go through Sport Lomo.
  1. Go to
  2. Search by type: Youth and HS
  3. Search by region: Rugby NorCal
  4. Search by club name: select Land Park RFC – you will not find us under “Motley” since we’ve merged with Land Park Harlequins and McClatchy.  We are still Motley, just not for registration purposes.
  • For those who have already registered and paid $200, we will refund a proportionate amount should the season be cancelled.

The good news about SportLomo is that all returning Motley player information will be automatically uploaded to the Sport Lomo, relieving you of additional paperwork.

Where to find additional information:  Land park rugby website  ( and Land Park Rugby FB.

COVID MANAGERS:  One person has volunteered so far but we need two more.  Please email me if you are interested.  Thank you!

JERSEYS:  we are still missing upwards of 20 jerseys from last year and I am hopeful we will collect these when trainings commence.  Typically we hand out jerseys, on loan for the season, at registration but we will likely hold off on the for now until the future becomes a little more clear.  You may purchase both black socks and Motley shorts from our team moms.  They may be at the trainings.

SEASON:  Assuming this comes off our first games are the second weekend of January.

You may always email me, Coach Rich, with questions and I will do my best to answer them.  Please be patient as the current situation is fluid and likely to change.

Coach Rich

  1. At this time we have a directive from Rugby Norcal that outlines formal rugby re opening December 12, 2020.  We are permitted to hold training sessions earlier and are targeting Tuesday December 1 as our first informal session.  We intend to hold December informal practices at Land Park Baseball fields every Tuesday/Thursday 3:30-5:00, migrating to Land Park Rugby and Soccer complex in January.
  2. The directive remains fluid…currently we are to manage the participants as such:
    1. Take players’ temperature prior to them stepping on the pitch (I suspect we take the coaches temps as well)
    2. Assign players to pods of no more than six.  These pods remain together and effectively isolated from other pods at each and every practice.
  3. Youth and MS rugby seasons at this time remain consistent with those dates of years’ past:  January through mid March.
  4. JERSEY COLLECTION:  our collection efforts have been impacted by issues surrounding social gatherings presented by COVID.  At this point in time we are targeting a Saturday in October/early November to collect jerseys.  It will likely be at Doc Oliver or the Land Park baseball fields.  More info to follow.  I am hopeful all 80+ Motley players from last season have kept their jerseys and will be responsible in returning them.  We do have a list of names and associated jersey numbers in order to track.  Last season we needed to make an emergency $2,500 bulk jersey purchase as upwards of 40 jerseys went missing from the previous year.

  1. Motley have merged with CKM McClatchy Lions high school rugby club and Land Park Lady Harlequins rugby club.  This is an effective way to pool resources and better serve all three clubs going forward.   We are now Sacramento Rugby Union.  The Motley name remains in place for youth/MS, and CKM Lions and Lady Harlequins names also remain.
    1. What this means:  We now have more support, from the high school players to their parents to their administrators.  We, in turn, must support them (give back).  The high school season will not conflict with our season (they play mid March through May/June).
    2. It is envisioned that the additional resources will support us with field set up/tear down, post game function, recruiting, equipment sharing and other logistics.  We will support them in the same manner.  We also feel this is a great way for the Motley players to establish connections with the older players, particularly since Motley Alum graduate to traditionally play for both McClatchy and the Harlequins.

Thank you for your patience during this time.  We will communicate any/all updates and revisions.

We are entering our 15th year and are one of the founding members of Middle School and Youth Rugby in the Sacramento area.

WEIGHT LIMITS:  The league differentiates teams by weight classification in order to keep play as safe as possible.  Players on the Open team play opponents only in the Open division while those on the Light team play opponents only in the Light division.  Weight guidelines are outlined below:

Middle School Open- 139lbs and up Light- 138lbs and below
U12 Open- 169lbs and below Light- 108lbs and below X-player: 170lbs and up
U10 Open- 139lbs and below Light- 80lbs and below X-player: 140lbs and up

NOTE:  Player weigh ins take place prior to each game.

If a youth player (up to and including those in sixth grade) exceeds the maximum weight limit he/she must wear red socks, which identifies that this player cannot be the first receiver of the ball and that as a tackler this player must be very conscious of making safe tackles on smaller players.

Motley have two teams each age grade; Light and Open.  This ensures Motley players play against similarly weighted opponents.

New Players are always welcome throughout the year.  We encourage you to give it a go with no financial commitment required until you attend numerous practices and become comfortable with rugby.

Registration will continue at practice.  You can print out the forms (see registration link on our website), fill them out, and bring them to practice.

If you have not registered before, bring copies of either your birth certificate or passport (will not be returned).  Extra registration forms will be provided at practice, or you may download from the Registration tab on this website.  We accept cash, checks and credit cards.

Registration dues are $200 for 2020.

We will take ID photos and collect the fee to play. ($100 goes to USA/NorCal Rugby).

About Motley

Land Park Motley is one of Northern California’s first and foremost youth rugby programs.  We field U-8, U-10, U-12 and Middle School teams. As a founding member of NorCal Youth Rugby Association, our commitment is to preserve the history and tradition of a sport that creates friendships for life. Many Motley players progress to play rugby at CK McClatchy, Jesuit, Christian Brothers, Rio Americano, El Camino, Kennedy and other High Schools.  Nearly all of our players continue to play rugby in college, and many have represented Motley at the High School all star levels and Collegiate All Americans, with one having achieved USA Eagles status in both sevens and fifteens.

Our coaches are certified, referees are certified, and we have a certified medical professional at every match.

We primarily play teams from within the Sacramento Valley and occasionally from the San Francisco Bay Area.

Jerseys are on loan for the season and must be returned.  Motley Rugby shorts and socks are mandatory and can be purchased from us for $35 and $5 respectively.

If you can’t make registration, or missed it, come on out. There is always room to participate.

Bring your cleats, a pair of shorts, a t-shirt and a mouthpiece. Mouthpieces are mandatory.
